How to Grow and Use Purslane

How to Grow and Use Purslane

Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is a weedy-looking little succulent that you might have growing wild in your lawn or flower garden. It’s also sometimes called pigweed. It's a low-growing plant with small, fleshy leaves and tiny yellow flowers. It can look ugly in garden beds. It spreads widely and quickly after it takes root. The medicinal value of purslane is large, as it is a rich source of vitamin C and alpha linolenic acid, one of the omega-3 fatty acids. But it’s not only medicinal; it’s a great culinary plant, which is cultivated in France as a lemon-flavored salad delicacy and enjoyed in fancy New York restaurants.

Things You'll Need:

Purslane seeds or plants

Nursery pot(s) or flat(s)

Garden space

Compost or rich potting soil

Trowel

1

Browse through seed catalogs to find a source for purslane seed. If you know of it growing wild, you can uproot several plants and transplant them into your garden.

2

The most reliable way to begin purslane from seed is to start it in nursery pots or flats. Prepare your pot with a good quality potting soil, into which you have added some rich compost.

3

The seeds are tiny, so simply scatter them on top of the soil in your pot or flat and then press them into the soil gently with your hand.

4

Water your pot or flat well, making certain not to knock the seeds out of the pot with too strong a stream of water.

5

Place your pot or flat in a location that gets filtered sunight. Be sure to keep the soil evenly moist. Germination should occur within one to two weeks.

6

When plants are two to three inches long they will begin to creep over the surface of the soil. This is a good time to transplant them into your garden. Keep the soil moist until your young purslane plants show good signs of strong growth and have begun to spread.

7

To use purslane as a delicious, nutritious addition to a salad or stir-fry, simply harvest the fleshy leaves, wash them and then add them to your dish.

Tips & Warnings

If you have a rocky area where nothing else will grow and you want something that’s healthy for you and totally low maintenance to grow, purslane is a good choice for introduction, as it is essentially a weed.

Purslane has the ability to spread where you don’t want it and it can be hard to get rid of. But it's a "wonderful weed" that you can share with your friends and neighbors.

How to Grow and Use Plantain

How to Grow and Use Plantain

Plantain (Plantago species) is not the cooking banana you might know as a plantain, but rather a small herb that’s often considered a lawn weed. It’s a low-growing pretty little plant with leaves in a rosette pattern. When it blooms, it sends up a flower spike that’s from 3 to 12 inches tall. Some variety of plantain grows on every continent on Earth, and all of the native peoples have used it for the same basic purposes of skin healing, and liver and kidney health.

Things You'll Need:

Plantain seeds or plants

Nursery pots or flats

Garden space

Compost or rich potting soil

Trowel

How to start plantain in your garden

1

If you look through herb seed catalogs, you'll find a source for plantain seed. If it grows wild in your neighborhood, you can dig up some plants and move them into your garden.

2

Start plantain seeds in nursery pots or flats and they will have a better survival rate, because they will be protected from slugs, snails and insects that like tender new growth. Fill your nursery pot or flat with a good quality potting soil mixed with some compost.

3

Because the seeds are tiny, scatter them on the surface of the soil in a pot or flat and then gently press them into the soil with your hand.

4

Give the pot or flat a good shower of water, being careful not to blow the seeds out of the pot with too strong a stream of water.

5

Put the newly sown seeds in filtered sunlight. Keep the soil evenly moist. Germination will occur within one to two weeks.

6

When young plantain seedlings have at least two sets of leaves, transplant them into the garden. Keep the soil moist until the plants show good signs of strong growth and begin to develop more leaves and grow larger.

7

You can make a simple poultice of plantain leaves and flowering tops by simmering sliced-up leaves in water for 20 minutes. When it cools, squeeze the liquid out of a handful of cooked leaves and then apply it to a burn, bite, or cut. Secure it with adhesive tape and leave it on as long as possible.

Tips & Warnings

Young, tender plantain leaves can be added to salads for a fresh, natural look and taste.

Plantain does like some moisture and tends to droop on hot, sunny days. Be sure to keep it moist when this happens.

How to Ground and Center Your Self

How to Ground and Center Your Self

Most people think of the phrase "ground and center" and immediately see a picture in their mind of a person sitting cross-legged and meditating. It works for that, but it also can help you relax and get a grip on yourself. Stressful situations call for you to have your wits about you. You need to think straight and be ready for action. Taking a few deep breaths and getting yourself back in control can help you do that.

1

Spend some time alone. It will give you a chance to tune into your body and find out what it's triggers are and what helps you to relax. Some people like to stand bare foot outside with their feet firmly in touch with the ground. Thats' nice, but you probably won't want to be doing it in December with snow on the ground. You can do this almost anywhere, at any time, when you get good enough at it.

2

Visualize. A friend of mine visualizes herself standing tall with her arms outstretched. She visualizes roots stemming from her feet and taking hold in the ground. As she continues on, and moves her hands upwards, she imagines silver cords shooting up towards heaven. She maintains this stance and takes several deep breaths. As she breathes in, she pulls in energy to support her and strengthen her. As she breathes out, she releases stress and any negativity that has collected around her. She holds this stance for three to five minutes and is ready to resume her activities.

3

Take several deep breaths. When inhaling, I pull in positive energy and pure white light. When exhaling, I allow all the negative energy out. Whenever you release energy, remember to put something back in its place. Think of things you love and care deeply about. They will give you strength.

4

After a few times of doing this alone (so you know what to expect), you will be able to do it pretty much any where. The first time I did it, I relaxed so much, I fell asleep. Like I said, know your body and know what it will do in certain situations.

5

When you're done, take a final deep breath. Regroup your thoughts. Make sure you have pulled in any roots or cords you have sent out.
When you have got things in order, go out and tackle whatever needs to be done.

Tips & Warnings

Do this whenever you feel something getting to you. Take a break. Pull your energy back and regroup.

How to Green Clean your Home Using Aromatherapy Essential Oils

How to Green Clean your Home Using Aromatherapy Essential Oils

More and more eco-friendly options are replacing products on the store shelves. However, nothing is more comforting than knowing you can make your own "green" cleaning products at home and know EXACTLY what is in them !

1

BASIC DISINFECTANT/CLEANSER: Fill a spray bottle 3/4 full with water (I use distilled so I don't have the mineral deposits). Add 1/2 to 3/4 cups of vodka (grain alcohol). I use grain alcohol so I have the scent of the essential oils, not alcohol. Add 4-6 drops of favorite aromatherapy essential oils (up to 4 varieties.)
Lavender
, lemon, tea tree, and pine are a good blend, and relatively inexpensive to use.

2

FLOOR CLEANERS: This is more a recipe for vinyl flooring. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for hardwood. Mix 1/4 cup white vinegar in bucket of tap water. Add 10 drops of pine, lemon, tea tree or other EO.

3

VACUUMING: Add a few drops of a chosen EO to a vacuum cleaner bag or to the water pan if it has one of those. Good choices are orange, grapefruit, lemon, peppermint.

4

WINDOW CLEANER: Mix 1 cup white vinegar with several drops lemon oil in spray bottle.

5

LAUNDRY: Disinfect laundry (and kill the dust mites in your bedding... the ones that don't drown anyway !) Add 15-20 drops of tea tree oil to your wash water or liquid detergent.

6

LAUNDRY (DRYER): Add a few drops of a chosen essential oil to a wet washcloth (make it an old one, oils stain usually.) This will softly scent your drying laundry. It will not soften however. To achieve this, also add 1-2 tennis balls. (a much less toxic choice than fabric softener sheets!)

Tips & Warnings

Good basic disinfecting/cleaning essential oils are: Lavender, tea tree, pine, lemon, grapefruit, spruce, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. This list is also some of the least expensive of the essential oils.

Be sure to get true aromatherapy essential oils, NOT fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are synthetic and useless for disinfecting and green cleaning.

How to Go to the Chiropractor Without Fear

How to Go to the Chiropractor Without Fear

If you have been experiencing some back or neck pain or tension and have considered going to a chiropractor, you'll need to do so without fear. Most people fear the unknown, so if you've never been to a chiropractor, it's only natural to feel some trepidation. But there are ways you to overcome your fear and go to a chiropractor with a clear mind.

1

Visit a local chiropractor's office and sit down with the doctor. Ask questions about what to expect and what chiropractic is all about. Take home any available brochures or information about chiropractic. The more you know about the practice, the less fear you might feel.

2

Know that chiropractors are licensed professionals with years of schooling and clinical study behind them. Chiropractic is not some mysterious "voodoo" practice but a recognized, proven method of alleviating back problems.

3

Concentrate on the fact that a chiropractor is going to ease or eliminate your back pain. Convincing yourself that you have a great chance at a pain-free future will help you go to the chiropractor without fear.

4

Make sure the doctor explains everything he is going to do to you before doing it. Have him explain terms like subluxation, adjustment and manipulation. If you know what to expect, you may have less reasons for feeling any fear.

5

Talk to relatives, friends or colleagues who have gone to chiropractors. Find out how it has helped to alleviate or eliminate their symptoms. Hearing chiropractic success stories can only help to rid you of your fear of going to a chiropractor.

Tips & Warnings

Tell your chiropractor if you don't like a certain type of adjustment or treatment. Some people, for example, don't like having their necks adjusted. Work with the doctor to devise the type of treatment that works best for you and keeps you feeling at ease.

Don't be tense when going to the chiropractor. You will need to be relaxed in order to be adjusted correctly.

How to Give Yourself An Enema

How to Give Yourself An Enema

Most people choose to take pills to address their problems with bowel movement, among which is constipation. While these methods are good and fairly safe, most of colon cleansing pills or teas give short-term relief from constipation. However, when symptoms of constipation stay on for days on end, a more direct procedure, such as an enema must be used to treat it.

Things You'll Need:

enema bag

castile enema soap

Davol colon tube

lubricant

heavy bath towel

a hook and area to hang the enema bag from (if you're doing your own enema)

1

Prepare the area where you'd give yourself an enema. Choose a place where you can hang your enema bag from at about 18-24 inches from your rectum.

2

Mix the solution you would be using. Among the types of enema solutions are: the soapsuds, salt, and tap water.
a) soapsuds solution: empty the contents of a castile soap into the enema bag. Pour warm water in the bag.
b) salt solution: mix a tablespoon of salt with warm water. The correct ratio for this is a teaspoon for two quarts of water.
c) tap water: just warm tap water.

3

Put lubricant on your enema bag's rectal nozzle.

4

Expel air from the enema bag by opening its shutoff for a few seconds. This helps reduce cramping.

5

Lubricate your anal area and rectum liberally.

6

Hang the enema bag 18-24 inches from your rectum.

7

Lie down on your left side with the right knee bent and the other leg straight. Place your left hand behind your back, near the shutoff of the enema bag. Place the towel under your buttocks.

8

Insert the rectal tube. It should be in 3 to 4 inches.

9

With your left hand, open the bag's shutoff valve to allow the solution to trickle in your rectum. Should you feel some discomfort, close the valve and resume when you feel ready.
Upon emptying the bag, remove the recatl tube slowly. Stay lying down to allow the solution to stay in the colon for a while.

10

Go to the toilet to expel the enema solution. Keep in mind that you cannot get rid of the solution in one go. After the first try, lie down. Also, remember that you should be near a toilet so you won't have to walk far.

11

If you used the soapsuds solution, follow it with a clear water cleanse

12

Clean the equipment you have used. hang the enema bag until it is completely dry.
