How to Give Yourself An Enema

How to Give Yourself An Enema

Most people choose to take pills to address their problems with bowel movement, among which is constipation. While these methods are good and fairly safe, most of colon cleansing pills or teas give short-term relief from constipation. However, when symptoms of constipation stay on for days on end, a more direct procedure, such as an enema must be used to treat it.

Things You'll Need:

enema bag

castile enema soap

Davol colon tube

lubricant

heavy bath towel

a hook and area to hang the enema bag from (if you're doing your own enema)

1

Prepare the area where you'd give yourself an enema. Choose a place where you can hang your enema bag from at about 18-24 inches from your rectum.

2

Mix the solution you would be using. Among the types of enema solutions are: the soapsuds, salt, and tap water.
a) soapsuds solution: empty the contents of a castile soap into the enema bag. Pour warm water in the bag.
b) salt solution: mix a tablespoon of salt with warm water. The correct ratio for this is a teaspoon for two quarts of water.
c) tap water: just warm tap water.

3

Put lubricant on your enema bag's rectal nozzle.

4

Expel air from the enema bag by opening its shutoff for a few seconds. This helps reduce cramping.

5

Lubricate your anal area and rectum liberally.

6

Hang the enema bag 18-24 inches from your rectum.

7

Lie down on your left side with the right knee bent and the other leg straight. Place your left hand behind your back, near the shutoff of the enema bag. Place the towel under your buttocks.

8

Insert the rectal tube. It should be in 3 to 4 inches.

9

With your left hand, open the bag's shutoff valve to allow the solution to trickle in your rectum. Should you feel some discomfort, close the valve and resume when you feel ready.
Upon emptying the bag, remove the recatl tube slowly. Stay lying down to allow the solution to stay in the colon for a while.

10

Go to the toilet to expel the enema solution. Keep in mind that you cannot get rid of the solution in one go. After the first try, lie down. Also, remember that you should be near a toilet so you won't have to walk far.

11

If you used the soapsuds solution, follow it with a clear water cleanse

12

Clean the equipment you have used. hang the enema bag until it is completely dry.
